Sadakchaap

: My quick take on Bhat camp’s “Sadak 2”

Yes, I am guilty of watching this “Sadakchaap” Sadak 2, which claims to be a sequel to the 90’s cult movie “Sadak”. Those were the days when Bhatt’s were ruling the roost and churning out hit after hits like Aashiqui, Daddy, Dil hai Ki manta nahi….. I think Kartoos was the last movie Mahesh Bhat directed and suddenly he took sannyasa from the direction in 1999. Mahesh Bhat’s tryst with taking sannyasa is not new, he has taken it from J Krishnamurthy then from Osho and now from movies. Like most of the Pakistani captains who make a comeback after retirement, Mahesh Bhat rose from ashes again in his writer/director 2.0 avatar and came out with Sadak 2. Looks like similar to the fate of Pakistani reinstated captains the tenure of Director Bhat will be short-lived.

The peter pan syndrome has caught up with Mahesh Bhat, it seems that he has not grown since 1991 because the sense and sensibilities (rather senselessness) of Sadak 2 is exactly similar to the 1991 movies. The Sadak 1 which was based on a Martin Scorsese’s movie Taxi Driver (Robert de Niro starer) became a huge hit mainly because of melodious music of Nadeem Shravan ( it had nearly 10-12 tracks) & an award-winning performance of Sadashiv Amrapurkar who played a eunuch don “Maharani” ( he had bagged Filmfare award for this role). The ‘villainish’ Maharani went on to become part of a hall of fame of best filmi villains of Bollywood and she can be considered one among equals to Gabbar Singhs, Mogambos, Shakaals.

Unfortunately, in Sadak 2, there is neither hummable music nor a maharani like an antagonist. Stage actor Makarand Deshpande did try to ‘ape’ maharani but the character was so badly written that he ended up looking like an ape instead. Sanju Baba struggled his best to perform and did well in his limited talent. Talented Aalia Bhatt does the heavy lifting of carrying the heavyweight of the movie on her petit shoulders, she has her moments of spark, but most of the time she has ended up hamming. Aditya Roy Kapoor is the new Rahul Roy of Bhatt camp it seems because after Aashiqui 2 he bagged this Sadak 2 movie. He has an inconsequential role opposite Alia. Badman Gulshan Kumar is wasted as villains sidekick. The plot is filled with too many half baked characters who suddenly spring up like toads on a rainy day. Imagine there is an “Owl” in the story, he is the pet of Aditya Roy Kapoor, I am not sure why this harry potterish ‘Hedwig’ was introduced in the plot. Maybe it is a metaphor used by the intelligent director to tell the audience “Kaisa Ullu banaya aapko”.

There is nothing good to write about this sadakchaap movie, yes only saving grace was we don’t get to see one Bhatt on screen i.e Pooja Bhatt ( luckily she is supposed to be dead in the movie ) but she makes up utilizing the screen time with her B&W photo and clips from Sadak 1 which are frequently sprinkled all over this plot. This movie is going be a “Bhatt” (butt) of a joke for Bhatts as he has come up with a half-baked screenplay, meaningless direction, ok music & some hamming performances by his cast.

Just in case you watch this movie, then please let me know in which genre this movie will be classified, a murder mystery or thriller, or a romantic plot or some Social awareness story?
