Simply “crass” : My quick take on Rohit Shetty’s “Cirkus”

It’s an odd tale of two Shettys, one gave us a ”class” Kantara while the other one presents “crass” cirkus 😁. I am a bit taken aback on this RSP PRODUCT, as I was always been an admirer of Rohit Shetty’s comedies (remember the Golmaal series) hence sat through this movie which was touted as an ‘electrical comedy’, sadly it turned out to be a mystery movie for me (because it was a mystery to me as to when to laugh during this 2-hour ordeal 😜).

For me, this Rohit Shetty production was more like a “Drought relief work” (रोज़गार हमी योजना) designed to provide employment to his staff and artists who went jobless in a recent pandemic. Hence he has packed the movie with so many artists. I only wish he had employed better writers who would have done lesser damage to ‘bard’s’ comedy of errors.

The chaos and confusion caused by the pair of twins (Ranveer and Varun) is the main premise of the screenplay. But the poor writing fails to inject any laughter converting this situational comedy into a ‘slapstick comedy. Yes, few characters get repeatedly ‘slapped’ throughout the movie.”

On the performance front, Sanjay Mishra has got some good lines and he makes the most of it. Johny lever’s brief cameo is enjoyable. Ironically Ranveer Singh who is known for his hyper-energy electric performance is like a zero-watt bulb, एकदम फूसका बार. Pooja Hegde who in her retro Avtaar reminds you of young Saira Bano, gives an ok performance, while other lasse Jaqueline is a real enigma as to how one can survive in Bollywood without looks and without any acting skills 😉.

The production designer has done a good job to create the 1960s era, a few outdoor shots of lush green tea estates of Ooty are breathtaking beauties. But for an item song of Deepika the musical tracks are below ordinary.

Only good thing about this movie is it's title ‘cirkus’ where they have removed the ‘cus’ word 😉, hence you will not find any below-the-belt humor. But this is not good enough invite for you to watch it in theaters, maybe you should wait for it to be released on OTT when you will have remote in hand to fast forward few insipid unintelligent and crass scenes.
