Simply superb: My quick take on Prithviraj’s movie ‘Jana Gana Mana’

I am yet to decide if it was the wonderful writing which impressed me or was it the intelligent direction or was it the flawless performances of the entire cast (especially Suraj and Prithviraj). Whatever it could be the final verdict is that JGM is one of the finely written and directed political crime thrillers I have come across in recent times. These Malayali Movie Makers have once again proven that they are light years ahead of the rest when it comes to content creation.

The writer has prudently adapted many real-life incidents which had made national headlines in recent times like the Telangana extrajudicial killings of rape convicts and the inquilab movement taking place in university at national capital. The plot is packed with twists and turns which keeps the audience engrossed. Ad filmmaker Dino Jose Antony has put to use all his skills in directing this upbeat movie. It’s hard to believe that this is his just a second movie as a director. He has very cleverly infused his anti-establishment views in the movie without making it look very obvious, like showing the quote of Bapuji on the walls of the court stating ‘In matters of conscience, the law of the majority has no place’, there are also shots where the saffron flags of the ruling political party is shown.

On the performance front, Suraj has shed his skin as a comedian and got into this ACP Sajjan Kumars role with aplomb. But the show-stealer is Prithviraj, what a performer he is!! One more thing which I loved about the movie is that, since it is sent in Bangalore the spoken dialog which is mostly in Malayalam is sprinkled with Kannada, and Tamil at times, which adds more authenticity to the plot.

It is said that the movie will be having a sequel, I however did not like this idea of a sequel as I had found this movie was complete in all senses. But who knows, no one had expected Drishyam to have a sequel that went on to be better than its prequel, isn't it?. Since the sequel was already announced, the makers had to create a lot of build-up for it post-climax of this movie, which in my view dragged the movie a bit.

Even though Netflix has bought the rights of this movie, I would strongly recommend this movie to you, why wait for good things in life.

Watch it.
