Vasan Bala, O’ my darling: My quick take Netflix movie “Monica, O’ my darling”
Have you loved Sriram Raghavan's ‘Andhadhun’? Then you should not miss this Vasan Bala’s crime comedy thriller. I thoroughly enjoyed this well-made thriller, it transported me back to Vijay Anand / Nasir Hussain days when I had enjoyed ‘jewel thief’ ‘teesri manzil’ and ‘johnny mera name. Incidentally, Sriram Raghavan’s name is included in the credit (I am not sure why) but the movie has a stamp of Sriram Raghavan, (set in Pune, shot in Pune, having all Maharashtrian characters)
The movie's poster gives a hint that corporate life is indeed a game of snakes and ladders (though the metaphor of snakes is literally used here). The plot revolves around a smart robotic IIT Engineer (Rajkumar Rao) who is handpicked by the chairman of a Robotic company as his heir and his to be son in law. This ambitious engineer has a fling with the chairman’s secretary “Monica” played very well by Huma Qureshi), and one fine day “मैं तुम्हारे बच्चे की माँ बनने वाली हू” moment happens and the screenplay gets into top gear. Let me not spell out what happens next but can assure you that it becomes a very entertaining yet convoluted story.
Hats off to Director Vasan Bala, for his intelligent handling of the screenplay (remember he is the talented guy who had made मर्द को दर्द नहीं होता and also had written the screenplay of 83). This is a good testimony of having a novel story, deft handling, hand-picked actors, and top-notch performances. This kid (Vasan Bala) is worth following, अपून तो फैन हो गया भाई.
Many have called this movie a neo-noir genre of movie which frankly speaking I Don't understand, अपुन को तो बहुत मज़ा आया. The BGM, songs/music, and funny dialogs all complimented the effective Direction of Bala and moved the overall watch ability index of the movie by a few notches upwards.
On the performance front, Huma Qureshi just rocks as Monica all actors irrespective of the length of their roles have given their best (Sikandar Kher, Radhika Apte, Rajkumar Rao & Bhagwati Perumal (he will remind you of master Bhagwan)).
Watch this darling, it's sheer fun. नहीं तो भी आपकी “डार्लिंग” क्रिकेट टीम बिना कप के लौट रही है 🤣(like in the snakes and ladder game, the longest snake is just before the final box which brings you down to starting line once again).
