Videshi Bajarangi Bhaijaan

Videshi Bajarangi Bhaijaan : My quick take on Tom Hanks ‘News of the world’ (Netflix)

Felt nice to see a western movie whose story can be debated as somewhat ‘influenced’ by our our desi movie ‘Bajrangi Bhaijaan’. Generally it is other way around, we the bollywood walas generally get influenced (better way to describe copying 🤓). In BB our Bhaijaan takes up an impossible mission to deliver ‘mute’ munni across the border to her parents, while in news of world Tom Hanks assumes the role of Bhaijaan and takes up a mission to deliver a girl recovered from red Indians to her uncle, here unlike munni the Johanna is not exactly mute but she talk only ‘Kiowa’ the language of Indians, hence she is as good as a mute girl. है कि नहीं एकदम सेम सेम स्टोरी लाइन 🤓.

The plot is set in 1870s in post civil war era, this period is beautifully recreated by the makers. Tom Hanks play a war veteran who has taken up a new vocation now that of a ‘news reader’ who goes from town to town and reads out news from old newspapers to the crowd for 10 cents per person. This 6 time academy award nominee actor is simply awesome and the johana (munni) played by Helena Zengel matches her performance to that of Hanks.

This a different kind of ‘western’ movie, hence if you are expecting a John Wayne or charles Bronson or Clint Eastwood type of colts and Winchester wielding cowboys, then you will be pleasantly surprised here. There are few thrilling moments in this movie too, which are very realistically shot. The landscape, and 1870 era beautifully recreated and also exposes the color/class divide in the society then.

It’s a decent film , one can watch it for performances of Hanks and Zengal, but certainly not the best movie of Hanks which can make a big ‘news of the entertainment world’ 🤓.
