Watchable fall

Watchable fall: My quick take on Netflix’s web series “Knightfall”

Have you ever felt so engrossed with season 1 of a web series that you desperately wanted to start watching Season 2? It happened to me while watching this part history part fiction tale of die-hard and battle-ready templars who are ready to die for their faith.

I was pleasantly surprised to see that the series was produced by the History channel, till now I was under impression that the channel just makes documentaries. Since it is a History Channel product, the production value of the series is awesome and they do claim that the series is broadly based on medieval historical facts. Currently, Netflix is showing season 1, but as I had mentioned that plot is so gripping that you will crave for S2 which unfortunately is not yet available on Netflix (however I managed to lay my hands on S2).

The plot is set in the medieval era (around 1300 AD) when the templars fail to hold against a 43-day siege of the city of Acre and have to flee, in the process fail to protect the holy relic “Holy Grail”. Later on, it is found that Holy Grail has landed in France and the plot now changes to finding this holy relic. This is my third movie about this Holy relic which was supposed to be the cup used by Lord during his last supper, other movies where the story moves around Holy Grail were Da Vinci Code and Indiana Jones and the last crusade.

There is lots of drama, action, deceit, rebellion, brotherhood, revenge, illicit love and love child, deferment of holy vows, which makes the series gripping and watchable. Shot in Croatia and the Czech Republic, the makers were able to recreate the medieval period beautifully.

I am a bit surprised to note that the series has not gained the kind of popularity that the fictional tales like Lord of the Rings or Game of Thrones has got, this one is based on historical facts and incidences should have garnered more popularity. The performances and plot make this period drama binge-watch worthy. I thoroughly enjoyed it, you too will love it if you love such period drama with excellent production value.
