कंफ्यूज करने की “कला“

कंफ्यूज करने की “कला”: My quick take on “Kaala” (Disney Hotstar)

It happens when you employ a team of writers to watch different movies/series and then come out with a concoction (खिचड़ी) and serve it as web series, looks like some writer has watched Family man, some watched Guns n Gulab, and some even took cues from Nolan, some got influenced by Jawan, some even sat through Haddi and came out with an incoherent screenplay of Kaala. (I am still at a loss as to why it is called काला, at least Rajani’s movie with same name the title was justifiable 😉)

Director Bejoy Nambiar has clearly missed the mark, his last series Sweet Karam Coffee was great treat but unfortunately, he failed to continue his home run here. In my view the main reason why Kaala looks so incoherent despite having enough TNT in it's story is it's too many Nolanesque timeline jumps which confuses the audience. Of the cast, only person I could identify was Avinash Tiwari, this trained actor starts off where he left us in Khakee, but only difference is that is on the right side of law here. It was a good ploy to use south indian star to do a role of a Tamil speaking agent (like Family man) , I am Seeing Nivetha Pethuraj for the first time. Oh yes, Shakti Kapoor does a cameo and literally gives a ‘muted’ performance.

Plot of traitor Father and Deshbhakt son, who is after an international racket of reverse hawala players, is hell-bent on exposing the people involved in the syndicate, usual twists in turns with moles in the system will consume a few hours of your weekend. Few outdoor locations are well shot, some chase scenes are well choreographed, however such impressive moments are few.

Overall it's a half-baked, half-cooked dish hence to be consumed with caution.
