ये कैसी कैफ़ियत !!

ये कैसी कैफ़ियत? : My quick take on Vidya Balan’s “Neeyat”

It is bit surprising that Amazon Prime produced this movie, but went for theatrical release instead of releasing it on OTT, दया producer ki नीयत में कुछ गडबड़ है 😜. Murder mysteries has always fascinated me, hence i generally dont miss any. This ‘whodunit’ plot might remind you of knives out or murder on the orient express. I would rate Gumnam as one of the best bollywood movies who did justice to Aghata Christi’s writing.

Like the ten little niger’s plot, here too a flamboyant n filthy rich tycoon who is on run from Indian authorities invites few of his close friends and relatives to celebrate his birthday party on his private island. As predicted this tycoon (played very well by Ram Kapoor) is found dead and the mystery deepens because there is one CBI officer among the invitees, who concludes that it was a murder and not a suicide or an accident.

As this investigation progress few more of guests are bumped off, then the usual trick of showing someone very suspicious and then proving otherwise goes on for a while. Then in a classic Aghatha Christi style the suspense is revealed in front of an entire bunch of suspects.

Vidya Balan plays the CBIwali investigator, she seems to have modeled her character on Hercule Poirot, hence unlike her Kahani avatar here she is shown very ग़बाळी 😜. Ram Kapoor in is ‘Mallya’esque getup and demeanor is certainly a show stopper here. There were other good actors like Niraj Kaabi and Rahul bose who unfortunately had little to showcase (it's a question mark on writer/director’s नीयत 😜 for not allowing them to shine in their respective roles)

A good murder mystery should have a good pace whereby the audience gets pinned to their chairs, unfortunately, the pacing of the plot was amiss here. The late introduction of Vidya Balan, very sketchy character development of the all inmates, sloppy writing makes the movie bit boring. It's the last 30 mins of climax which is riveting (I loved the twist in the ‘tail’ end). Overall, I think makers missed a good opportunity to come out with a good murder mystery.

Now please Dont doubt my “Neeyat” if I ask you to stay away as I am very confident that Amazon will prepone it's release on OTT. You can watch it soon.
